AI-generated fake selfie of Mia Goth spread by a verified Instagram fan account; Meta removed the account

After reports in October that actress Mia Goth had filed for divorce from Shia LaBeouf, a verified Instagram fan account called "miagoth_" posted a fake selfie of her wearing a shirt reading "MY EX IS MY BIGGEST FAN". The account had over a million followers, and many users and some entertainment outlets took the image as real. Goth's representatives said the image was AI-generated, said they had filed multiple complaints with Instagram, and criticised the platform for letting the account keep its blue check. A Meta spokesperson said the account was removed for impersonating a public figure.

What the AI did

AI was used to create a fake selfie of actress Mia Goth wearing a shirt reading "MY EX IS MY BIGGEST FAN". A verified Instagram fan account that had been posting AI-made images of her shared it. Who made the image, and with which AI tool, has not been reported.
