AI voice-cloning scam faked a daughter's kidnapping and conned a California mother out of $5,400
Scammers reportedly used AI to clone the voice of a California mother's adult daughter and staged a fake kidnapping by a Mexican drug cartel, keeping the mother on the phone for five and a half hours. The caller demanded $20,000, and she wired $5,400 in multiple transactions to Mexico before learning her daughter was safe at work. Martinez police are investigating. The mother later told a U.S. Senate hearing on AI-enabled fraud that she remains "completely traumatized."
