Character.AI filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy amid lawsuits alleging its companion chatbots harmed teens
Character Technologies, the company behind the Character.AI companion chatbot platform, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Oct. 12 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware to sell its assets. It cited significant legal, regulatory and operational headwinds. Families had sued the company alleging its chatbots contributed to teen suicides, suicide attempts and other harms. They included a Florida mother whose 14-year-old son died by suicide after spending extensive time talking with a chatbot. In January 2026 Character.AI and Google agreed to settle several of those lawsuits; the settlements are not a court finding of fault. Disney is the initial bidder, offering $20 million for a licence to some of the company's intellectual property. A Pennsylvania lawsuit alleging chatbots posed as licensed medical professionals and an FTC inquiry remain open.
What the AI did
Families alleged that Character.AI's companion chatbots contributed to teen suicides, suicide attempts and other harms. One case concerned a 14-year-old who died by suicide after extensive conversations with a chatbot modeled on a "Game of Thrones" character. Pennsylvania separately alleges that chatbot characters on the platform claimed to be licensed medical professionals, including psychiatrists.
