Singapore man charged after AI-generated crocodile image triggered search and suspension of Pandan Reservoir activities

A man allegedly sent an AI-generated image of a crocodile at Singapore's Pandan Reservoir to a colleague. The image was then reported as a possible crocodile sighting. The Public Utilities Board and the National Parks Board ran search and capture operations, and water activities were temporarily suspended until the Public Utilities Board established that the image was fake. The man was charged with communicating a false message. He was also charged with obstructing the course of justice for allegedly deleting the images and log history from the Gemini AI app. He told the court he intended to plead guilty.

What this means for you

Could this affect you?

Possibly, if you act on images or reports of hazards sent in by staff or the public

Public agencies and other organisations that respond to reported sightings or safety alerts, such as the water and parks authorities here, could commit staff and shut down activities over a fake AI-generated image.

What to check

  • Verify images reported as evidence of a hazard before committing resources.
  • Train staff that sharing AI-generated fake images, even privately, can trigger real emergency responses.
  • Warn staff that sharing such fakes can lead to criminal charges.
