Suspected AI-generated photographs appeared in Nigeria's INEC preliminary voters' register, prompting an investigation

Social media users reported suspected AI-generated photographs in the Preliminary Register of Voters that Nigeria's Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) published online on 26 October 2026. INEC said the online register is the same preliminary register physically displayed nationwide from 9th to 15th October 2026, during which questionable registration records were flagged. The commission said it is examining the circumstances, including possible technical or procedural lapses, and will act on verified findings before certifying the final register on 15th December 2026.
